Engine warning light on: can I keep driving?

If it stays on

Usually not urgent; it may be a sensor or emissions warning. Avoid hard acceleration and visit a garage as soon as possible.

If it flashes

This may be a serious ignition problem that can damage the catalytic converter. Stop in a safe place and ask for help.

Stop immediately if

• the oil pressure light (red oil can) comes on
• the temperature gauge is in the red
• the brake warning light comes on
• there is smoke, a burning smell or loss of power

Don’t force the car in these cases; request a tow in the app by choosing “Engine fault, car won’t move”.
